    Thank you Doug for your golf tips. I am 78 , and can no longer have the strength and flexibility to generate a decent clubhesd speed. My drives avg. around 190 yes., but have learned to be content with this. In the past I used to suffer from lower back and left shoulder pain, and I am definitely going to the sq. to sq. swing. It makes a lot of sense to me,and I think it will work just fine

    Range yesterday and sir, I have NEVER hit irons longer and higher! I am 73 years young
    And still feel great, but had lost a lot of distance since knee surgery 2 yrs ago. I could not
    believe my own eyes! Thanks again.

    Thank you for the tip.Im 79 years old and what you tell about the 3/4swing its so logical and I realize that at my age is the best I can do with the same results as my full swing when I was 50.

    I M now 91 and have played golf since I was 64, and about to give it away until I saw your latest swing ideas, I have wasted a lot of money on young pros telling me to go back in my backswing and break my wrists. Tomorrow I start a new life at our practice range trying to get back to the square takeaway and follow through which was very suitable for me before the experts insisted on changes.

    man it is great to see a person with great skill and pasion,that is happy to pass on his skill to the man on the street.new zealand has some great clubs to play on.you guys need to pop down under as in auckland we would have over ten plus clubs to play on that is only ,a hour from each other.

    Doug, welcome to the TJ Surgery survivors! I need your video very very much. At 71 years old, I have lost most of my suppleness. Arthritis in my left shoulder doesn't help either. I am a golf nut. Always was. Took clubs with me on road trips.

    I'm 70, a 13 index, and have already started shortening my swing. I have found that I am finding the center of the fairway more than ever with not much loss in distance. I think by shortening my swing I have actually been doing the sq to sq method without realizing it. The biggest improvement for me has been in the mid to short irons.

    Have never been able to take a full swing so i have been using the 3/4 swing for years and it works. Always straight but not always the longest drive. I will add more club head speed and follow threw. Iron shots and putting are good. Thanks for the help can't wait for next video.

    Had this swing most of my golfing life, and I am the straightest player I know, but, one of the shortest, this swing will not give you any advantage in length , fact!

    It's a little hard to try this right now cause of the weather, But I will try this out soon. I'm a 11 hdcp and I have problems with my back for a full swing,So I will try it and let you know how it turns out.

    Love the instructional videos. The lessons confirm some of my own self-taught golf techniques [i.e., the 3/4 swing; the square head position & follow through, etc.]. I've been using your suggestions and am consistently out-driving my thirty-something sons while routinely putting more balls into play... much to my sons' consternation and bemusement.

    The bottom line is your techniques work for us older guys.

    Thanks doug I'm in down under Australia I received your 1st video 3days ago I used to play off 5 i have been struggling at moment to play to a handicap of 8 played yesterday used your method and shot 73 &beat club champion by a shot & that's with 4 three putts can't wait to get putting video by the way I'm 56 years old club champion is 25 years old .I did forget a couple of times the method though out the round soon it will come natural.....many thanks John

    I played a game yesterday after a lay off of almost 2 years from arthritis in the shoulders and a toe amputation which caused a (L) broken foot. I was only a 21 handicap player and yesterday, using your swing technique, I pared the first 2 holes and had a great day. I found that I was driving straight but the best thing was that the ball would roll on forever after landing. I was achieving 200m plus on most of my drives.

    This is the best thing i have learn since toast bread its amazing ,i will tell you why I played in many tournaments was a plus 3 handicap 4 years ago my life got busy and now i am a 6 handicap I got a lesson 3 months ago and told me " to take a full swing and cup my left wrist at the top and hold it as long as i could " well guess what first time in my life I have severe elbow issues and now have tennis elbow can barley hold a club I found this sq to sq swing last night i went to the range and went ya this is what i was doing 5 years ago this feels right and didn't think i was doing it right I am reassured by this video that I am on the right track and hoping to compete again need to see the rest of your lesson and videos please how do i get it

    I have tried it in Dar es Salaam with one of the Local pro by the Name of Geoffrey Leverian at Lugalo Golf Course and it has given me the desired results. For a long time I have been unable to play under on this 72 par golf course, but last week I did it ( 1 under 71 net strokes and almost won a major trophy at the Club. My handicap is 16.

    I will continue using it and I will keep proving you a feedback. I

    Isn't this swing the Moe Norman single plane swing? Moe Norman is considered the greatest ball striker of all time.

    I have had both knees done, both wrists, the left shoulder, a hernia from swinging too hard, and many pulled muscles. Logically, if I want to play golf, I must change something. I will begin to integrate this square to square swing during the next 3 days and test it Friday at Lompoc, CA. I really would like to quit giving away $5 or $6 bucks every week to the rest of the foursome. I will report back next week.

    Doug, I've been swinging square to square for at least 10 years. I'm 69 years young and I still drive it 20 to 30 yards past the guys 10 to 15 years younger than I. Oh, I hit the fairways too.

    Hi Doug...I recently went to a 3/4 swing and a
    I'm hItting the ball straighter and a hell of a lot farther. I've slowed down my back swing and loosened up on the grip...half way through the down swing, I release and throw the club head at my predetermined target on my pre shot setup!...wow!...where I was always in conflict with mysel and the stress I had to endure at tee off, I now have confidence in the process and with myself!...having a lot of fun!..

    Yes it is true. I tried is yesterday after two years of not playingbgolf due to a bulging disc. I have been struggling to resume golf with a lot of pain but yesterday I played 76 gross of handcap 15.

    Old sports injuries have prevented me from using a full swing without a lot of stress and pain. I thought I could make less of a turn but was always fearful that I'd give up to much power. I'll concentrate on making 3/4 swings this week and let you know how it affects my game. If it does work I will share it with the 12 others that I am teaching so they can enjoy the game more.

    Hey Doug,
    This sounds and looks good but I would like to see some full shots with the square to square swing. I'm 67 and lost a lot of flexibility so this will help me a lot.
    I feel the 3/4 swing is the GO now and will go and work on it as it should give more power at the bottom and through the ball. I will come back and let all know what the outcome is, but everybody must be mindful that putting and chipping can make up for a lot of sins!

    I'm 54 years old and have never been very flexible. I learned about 10 years ago I could hit the ball alot straighter with a 3/4 swing. Especially with my fairway woods. Eventually I incorperated that swing in all my clubs. I used to be much shorter off the tee but as I got use to it I was hitting as far as my brother who has been playing longer and way more often. Speaking of often. This swing also helps us who don't practice much or play often. By the way, I've never been a great golfer and happy when I'm hiting in the low 90s. This swing helps me stay there even though not playing very often. Glad to this technic being used by the pros and I'm sure I will pick up some good tips.

    Hi Doug, i played your square to square method when i was younger and was playing off 9, then i tried to change to the modern method! My game has been going down hill and am now playing off 13. I received your first video yesterday and i thought to myself - gosh I remember i used to play like that! So this morning I played square to square and shot a scratch 79, could have been a lot better if i had not gone into the woods and shot a six! The six was a result in me trying to do a full swing and going for the big drive, I learned from my mistake and played the rest of my round with the odd boggy. I look forward to tomorrow's game!     Ive used the square to square for ten years, I beat it down there further than most. It stands to reason keeping the club square leads to a more probable good strike. Ive told my mates this for years. I also have a 3/4 swing !

    Doug I am intrigued. I am 61 and in good shape physically. I have been chasing Ben Hogan's swing for two years. I go to my local pro and he wants me to draw the ball and to do it "rotate my hands through the impact area". I went from a pretty consistent drive to army golf on the range trying to time this action. I am normally a fast learner but I am frustrated with this approach after only hitting about 175 balls. I plan to try this approach today and see what happens.

    Hello Doug,

    Thanks for the video instruction. Have been playing since around 1972. My first vcr tape was Jack Nicklaus: Golf My Way.

    When I was young, I had a full swing but my accuracy was off. As an older player in my middle 50's, I have been using a square to square method and 3/4 swing. The adjusted swing has meant much more predictable tee shots and iron shots.

    I am currently an 8 handicap and realize that more work around the greens and bunkers is where I can drop my handicap lower.

    Sounds just like Moe Normans Natural Golf method or very similar. Please supply the non tapered all weather grip material and I'll buy a life time supply. Almost Natural Golf and it will work, Natural golf basics is exactly the same, keep it going.

    I hear what you are saying and your accomplishments especially rooky of the yr on champion tour speak for themselves but I am swing the club better then ever at 55. My drives are straight and as long as ever all while I know my swing is shorter. What catches my attention about your program is my torn right lybrum (part of rotator cuff) and hyrniated disc in my L2 that when out of whack from golf swing causes all kinds of weird pain in my lower back, right hip and rt knee and abs. So what to do??

    Hi Doug,

    Watching this video, I was reminded about my friendship with several professional hockey players and what excellent golfers they ALL are. It occurred to me that the reason might very well be that the slap shot and the slap pass are most definitely square-to-square. They have been making that move on the ice their entire lives so it just naturally carried over to golf.

    I'm 71 now with two hip replacements, a bad back and golfer's elbow. None of these reduced my love of golf but they sure did diminish my ability to play and enjoyment of playing. I'm ordering your videos and my golfing buddy just did on my advice. Yesterday, just for kicks, I went to the range and hit 30 balls. 2/3 were about as good as I can hit them (compared to about 1/3 previously) 5 were playable and 5 were poor (compared to 2-3 playable and more than 15 poor before.)

    Doug, I am 80 years old and learned the STS swing in 1944 when I started playing
    golf. I was taught by Ray Bradford, possibly the best amateur golfer that
    Louisiana ever produced. Ray was taught by Tommy Armour, Sr. and was absolutely
    amazing. Tommy Bolt once made the mistake of challenging him on his home course
    and it cost him several thousand dollars. At 80, I am no longer quite as long as
    I once was, but I can still keep it in the fairway and pllay with the long-knockers.

    This is very interesting.I tried your swing today and it was very accurate but seemed a little shorter than the Tour swing.Could one use your swing for the irons and the longer Tour swing for the woods,where accuracy is not at a premium as it is with the irons?
    I was wondering how you injured your left elbow using the Tour Swing.Were you trying to have a stiff straight left arm instead of a straight relaxed one.One doesn't need a straight left arm to play outstanding golf.Most Tour players bend their left elbows a little and this tends to reduce injury and I find it increases power.Even the great Harry Vardon played with a little bend in his left elbow.
    You probably were a winner on Tour because you were an outstanding putter.I believe that most Tour players can hit the greens in regulation but the differences between them rests with their putters.The best putters tend to win.PLEASE COMMENT!

    Doug, thanks for confirming what I suspected. I have played for years with a limited 3/4 swing as you describe. I get compliments for being such a straight hitter. I am 57, have played golf for 45 years and have had no injury problems with this swing. I can compete with guys that are 50 yards longer off the tee because sooner or later their "long swings" and lack of consistency catches up to them. I am going to purchase your videos to help refine and reinforce what I am doing. Thanks for this great information. Mike

    Hi Doug: Am 72 yrs old and just as I reached 70 my body just gave way and have not been able to play for over a year (13 handicap) when the shoulder was replaced, back problems, etc and I miss playing so terribly after playing golf all my life I can't help but miss it.

    Am able to do a little practicing but my right arm is stuck parallel to the ground-which means I can't possibly get to parallel at the top or a "full swing". Also feels like I need to change my grip-pls tell me what you recommend to get used to the 3/4 swing and how do I accomplish this.

    Another point that I am in complete agreement with. When analyzing the "over the top" problem, the full swing is the root of the problem. Having made a ninety degree body turn in order to produce a full swing, a golfer's first move is to begin turning back, even before swinging the club down. That turn immediately takes the club off the swing plane. Yet all the self-styled experts insist that everyone has to make a full swing. Compounding the problem is the insistence that the golfer has to rapidly twist (throw) the body back toward the ball, which introduces unreasonable stresses on the back and knees. No wonder so many golfers have ruined their back and knees.

    although I some time think I am a Tenny bopper and digerss ..and am quickly reminded
    of the Sq. Sq. is so much better.. (for my body) however the ole brain is hard to teach.

    Hi Doug, just watched your first Video and tested out on the range yesterday it certianly made a difference. One question, I am natuerly right handed but all my golfing life I play left handed and find I have a very strong right hand, is there any advice you can me for this situation

    I am 66 and have had major flashing in my wrist action for the last decade. My lack of flexibility started to have two issues: My hips hurt so badly I could hardly walk after extended sitting in a chair and I had a chronic contact with towards the toe of the club.
    As I tired on he back 9, it got worse. I am still struggling with my lack of wrist action, but am amazed the distance has not suffered. Even when I hit a little thin, the ball is straight. I am enjoying the game again. Thanks.

    Hi Doug I have watched your first two myths and I have not yet been able to try them out as the weather where I live is not great and school issues. I am a young active 13 year old but when ever I play golf no matter how I swing a feel stress in my arms and lower body and I feel I am hitting the ball so much further but I am still slicing the ball any ideas ? Could you reply to me over my email please as I could get back to you much easier thank you.

      Hi Josh, Mu best advice to you would be to arrange some lessons with a PGA pro. Slicing is caused by the club path moving across the ball at strike that putts side spin on the ball. Your path through the ball has to be corrected, you are probably hitting from the top of the swing with your arms and moving the club on an out to in path . Your move should be an in to out swing path allowing your body turn to effect the strike rather than an arm swing that hits from the top. A couple of lessons from a pro will sort this out and it will be worth it. At your age it is vital that you get correct instruction so that you are starting your golf in the right direction. Be careful to get the right instruction, not from articles or friends but by a professional. Best wishes Peter.

    I'm 63 and found this video 2 days ago. I used to swing like this. I lost my swing since Feb of this year. No clue what I was doing. Practiced 1 day before today, going back to what I have been doing till I saw the video. The video was a complete wake up call. I was up at 4:00am watching on my computer. Shot 74 today.     OK...i am amazed. I am 64, shoot in the low 80's..a lousy putter, but...i have been working on the S2S method and man am i impressed. My irons are effortless and on a rope. I haven't figured out how to hit my metal woods or driver on this method but my irons are butter. So, what am i doing wrong with my woods??? I can hit them well with my old swing but not the S2S. Advice?

    The 3/4 swing works very well. As you mention, Holmes hits it a mile with this length backswing. Brian Gay, Steve Stricker use it as well.
    You do not lose any clubhead speed and make much more solid contact. Many people seem to take it back too far and lose their coil by lifting the arms to complete the swing.
    This controlled, sqare face swing has been working for me for two years since I started using it. I am 59 and my handicap went from 5 to 0.8 using this.

    Again it sounds a bit like Jimmy Ballard, his "coil approach" not a big hip turn. Just as I had made comment after your first video your square to square is Jimmy Ballard "toe in the air is square". Have you read his book?

    Have you tried stretching for flexibility? There are a LOT of stretching exercises out there that work. Losing a little weight also helps. Nothing personal. I'm just sayin.

    I would love to learn how to make an effective 3/4 swing but have making a full swing all of my golfing life (45 years) and don't know how to fix it - the stress is killing my back - any tips on how to do this?

      In my experience, if you haven't lost any motion or flexibility yet, you will as you continue to age....it's just natural. Maybe you won't lose much due to heredity and life style (and that's good!), but most of us do lose at least some. If you're having pain DURING your swing, then you're going to have to concentrate on taking a little less backswing (yeah, one more thing to be cognizant of during your swing!). If you're painful after your golf game then good stretching exercises before and after your round will help.

    Sir, Everything you said makes complete sense!! I have "new boyfriend" coming out to Page,AZ. on March 15th-need to not make fool of myself {he says has a handicap of 12}Heck I put 4 Master's Badges in trash to go to horse show-I did win State Championship.
    I don't know where you live but what about you & your wife come out to Page/AZ/Lake Powell-take a little vacation so to speak.     I have not got my videos yet, so wondered i taught myself to play many years ago, and did it by hooding the clubface to the ground. Is square to square going to hold the face in a similar position. For years have been trying to open the face up. I have had both shoulders resurfaced, so would appreciate a shorter swing, but get more length. Can't wait to see the videos.

    He there, a full swing is my problem, too flexible. Love the idea of 3/4 swing, however, I can't stop going to the full. Does Doug have swing thoughts and/or drills on the videos to help shorten your swing? It seems like I can manage a shorter swing the first couple of holes, however, after time, get back in the bad habit of full swing.

      Swing in front of a mirror. Stop your backswing when your hands get shoulder high. That's a 3/4 backswing. You have to practice something new until it replaces the old habit. Those who know say it takes 2-4 months depending on how much you work at it.

    I have pirchased your Master Series video and liked it....I am 74 with two degenative discs and so this will be helpful for me...do you give private lessons and if so, where?

    Also, are there any instructors in Western Pennsylvania who teach your method?...you should franchise this method of teaching and take it across the country.

    Question: OK, here comes a real stupid question. I have had numerous instructors and lessons and I am still all over the place. Each instructor teaches something else which none of it really helped. I practice and play regularly and still push the ball, hit fat or thin. The only thing I have ever corrected was my slice. I have also had numerous operations to my left shoulder and neck. I am not flexible and never will be, my entire neck (all 7 disc) have been fuzzed. My question is can or will your program help me get my swing and game under control? I know you are trying to sell your program and I have purchased instructions before just to end up just as frustrated as before. Really, can you help me. Be honest.

      Hi Kenny, reading the comments and questions to Doug the answer to your question is that as a beginner what you need is to take golf lessons to learn the proper grip for you, stance and other 80 things (just joking) you have to think about before hitting a golf ball. There are many things involved in this wonderful sport and at the end I´m sure it will become a passion for you. Find a golf teacher near you home and tell him about Doug´s tips so you can practice them with a proffessional supervision.

    Great discussion on the square to square method. I had surgery in mid-October for a detached tricep in the right arm. I am right handed and a scratch handicap. It fully detached in late September, fighting the pain and using compression sleeves, I played in two tournamnets. Amazingly , I hit more greens and fairways with this method, however, lost 30 yards off the tee. I am in physical therapy now and looking to be stronger by February. Thanks and I will keep up the method, great confirmation for me!

    Doug, I am a firm believer of giving my students an option of range of motion. The square to square clearly suggest that if you don't have much flexibility. Doug I call it getting to a good "L" position in the backswing. Practice with good timing will help this 3/4 swing.

    Thanks for your "Sqare to Square". I have played this for many years--I am 78 yrs old and as a former rugby league player have had new knees and a shoulder reconstruction,but manage still to break 90 every time I play,even though my putting is a let down. I endorse every thing you claim for this method. It is simple and pretty well "fool proof"--there have been periods when I have attempted to lengthen my swing to no avail and have reverted back to my sqare to square, three quarter swing (or less depending on my shoulder "condition" day to day"). With this method I manage to out hit most of the younger players I meet and I contact you purely because you have given me faith in my sometimes mocked short swing!

    I know Jamie Sadlowski (who is currently the longest hitter on the planet) is incredibly flexible and takes a long swing. However, it appears to me he keeps the club square to square rather than rolling his wrists. Am I right about this?

    You mentioned that your left elbow was a painful problem. I am 77 years old, right handed, and recently my right elbow has begun to be painful. I realize you are not a doctor, but are you familiar with this problem on the right elbow? I only use a 3/4 swing.

      I'm not a doctor either Bill but I have had the same problem with my right elbow. It's like tennis elbow but it's a different tendon in the elbow. The cause of my problem was casting or coming over the top at the start of the downswing. Go to the top of your backswing and stop. Now start your downswing by turning your trunk, core, stomach, whatever key you want to use. Your hands, arms, and club HAVE to follow and will approach the ball from inside your target line. You can also put a headcover just outside and behind the ball. If you come over the top to start the downswing, you will hit that headcover. Another drill is to swing to the top and stop. Turn to start down and stop whe the club is half way down - the shaft is parallel to the ground and parallel to your target line. The toe of the club should be pointing up and the face of the club pointing away from you - Doug's toe up or square position.

      Yes, I give golf lessons. I'm entering my 17th year.

    I think I mentioned before that I am 78 in 2 days time and I am enjoying what I see on the videos. Owing to a very wet year our course is closed, however I go to a local driving range and everything seems to be ok. I am looking forward to playing again, hopefully before spring in order to bring my practise to the course. Only competing will let me know if I have taken everything on board.       My swing is now sq to sq as I used to squeeze the ball and changed it to sq to sq starting in 2008. I was 66 then and had been on single figures (on scr to 4 for 37 yrs) for more than 45 yrs on many tracks round the world. It got to the stage that I did not know where the ball was going and then changed and my oh my has it done wonders. It took nigh on 3 yrs to get it right but have broken my age 2 x in 2012 with a 68 and a 69 and 3 x 70 so that is equal age on our track which is 6,100m or 6,700+ yds.

      I feel the 3/4 swing is the GO now and will go and work on it as it should give more power at the bottom and through the ball. I will come back and let all know what the outcome is, but everybody must be mindful that putting and chipping can make up for a lot of sins!
